Hyung Do San

Do-San is a pseudonym of the patriot Ahn Chang-Ho (1876 - 1938). The 24 movements represent his entire life which he devoted to furthering education in Korea and the Korean independence movement. Ahn Chang-Ho opposed the use of military force to seek independence. He was a major force in the Korean Independence movement; he was particularly known for maintaining the Korean educational system during occupation. He was among the first Koreans to emigrate the US in 1903.

In 1907 he returned to his Korea to begin the Sinminhoe (New People’s Society). Sinminhoe sought independence through education, business, and culture. A year later this organization founded Taesong School to provide Korean children with education of Korean Nationalism.

At the end of WWI To-San returned to America to pressure Wilson into speaking on behalf of Korean Independence.

In 1919 To-San helped set up the Provisional Government in exile in Shanghai. They drew up a Constitution providing for personal freedom and abolished the nobility class.

On March 1, 1919 the provisional government declared Korean Independence.
